What is Reiki?

Reiki is an energy healing system founded in the early 1900's by a Buddhist scholar named Mikao Usui. The direct translation from Japanese is Universal Spiritual Energy. Reiki functions on the principle that we all have an energy body or auric field in addition to our physical body. Our energy body is formed of higher finer vibrations and co-exists/interacts with our physical body on the level of form. Blockages in our energy body can manifest as physical pain/tension, emotional imbalances and illness, as well as hindering energy circulation within the body.

During a Reiki session, the practitioner connects to Reiki (Universal Spiritual Energy) and facilitates an energy transfer to the client. This transfer is actioned by the practitioner placing their hands on or above the client's main energy points (chakras). The practitioner may also work on any other non-intimate areas where they detect energy blockages. Through the influx of this additional energy, blockages within the client can be loosened and ultimately dissolved. As a result of this the client can feel lighter, more balanced and more energised.

Whilst experiencing Reiki many clients enter a meditative state and connect with themselves on a deep level. This is the state in which we are able to generate self-healing on all levels and access the vast knowledge already within us. Because of this it is not uncommon for a client to gain increased insight and intuition following a session, or to have visions or vivid dreams. Although Reiki is an intensely personal experience, the overwhelming feeling for many clients is a feeling of profound relaxation, warmth and restoration.

Reiki history

The story of Reiki is fascinating and well-documented. Mikao Usui (1865-1926) began his journey in Taniai village (now called Miyama-cho) in Japan. With a background in business and medicine, he was also a dedicated Buddhist practitioner who spent years studying both Eastern and Western spiritual practices.

In 1922, Usui underwent a transformative experience during a 21-day meditation retreat on Mount Kurama. According to historical records, he was fasting and meditating when he experienced a powerful moment of enlightenment. This experience gave him the ability to channel healing energy and marked the birth of Reiki as we know it today.

After his discovery, Usui opened a healing center in Harajuku, Tokyo, in April 1922. He called his practice "Usui Reiki Ryoho" (Usui Reiki Healing Method) and began teaching others. His reputation grew, especially after he helped many victims of the devastating Kanto earthquake in 1923.

Usui developed a structured teaching system with three levels: Shoden (First Degree), Okuden (Second Degree), and Shinpiden (Master Level). Before his passing in 1926, he had trained over 2,000 students and 16 Reiki Masters, ensuring his healing method would continue.

One of these masters, Chujiro Hayashi, played a crucial role in preserving and spreading Reiki. He trained Mrs. Hawayo Takata, who later brought Reiki to the Western world in the late 1930s. Thanks to their dedication, we can practice this valuable healing art today.

The healing potential

Research and documented cases worldwide show Reiki's effectiveness in supporting various aspects of well-being. From reducing anxiety and depression to supporting post-surgery recovery, Reiki works by activating your body's natural healing response. It can help balance your chakras - your body's energy centers - promoting physical and emotional healing. Many healthcare facilities now incorporate Reiki as a complementary therapy, noting its benefits in pain management, stress reduction, and overall wellness.

What happens during a Reiki session?

A Reiki session is a simple yet deeply transformative experience. While the process is gentle, its effects can be profound and far-reaching. Here’s what you can expect during and after a session:

During the Session

As you lie comfortably, you’ll likely enter a state of deep relaxation and calm. Many clients report feeling warmth or gentle tingling sensations as the energy flows. You might notice subtle pulses or vibrations, see colors or patterns in your mind’s eye, or even feel a light, floating sensation. For some, emotions may surface, leading to a natural release of stored feelings.

Reiki works on a deep level, and everyone’s experience is unique. While some feel immediately relaxed and uplifted, others might experience temporary emotional intensity as old feelings come to the surface. You might feel more sensitive or emotional in the days following the session, or notice brief physical sensations as energy shifts within your body. Vivid dreams, memories, or even a desire to make positive life changes can also arise.

These responses are completely normal and are signs that healing is unfolding. Think of it like cleaning out a closet—sometimes things need to come out before they can be organized. I’m here to guide and support you through this process, ensuring we move at a pace that feels comfortable and right for you.

After the Session

Most people leave a Reiki session feeling deeply relaxed and at peace. You might feel energized or, conversely, need extra rest as your body integrates the healing. Over the following days, emotional clarity often emerges, helping you gain insight into situations or patterns in your life. Physical tension typically eases, and many clients notice improved sleep patterns.

You may also find that your intuition feels sharper, making decision-making easier and more aligned with your true self. Reiki’s effects continue to unfold in the days and weeks after your session, supporting your overall well-being on physical, emotional, and spiritual levels.

Every Reiki journey is personal, and I’m here to support you every step of the way. Whether you’re seeking relaxation, emotional healing, or deeper self-awareness, Reiki offers a gentle yet powerful path to balance and renewal.
